I am deeply frustrated by Calvinism and more broadly the Reformed theology. In many way subtle ways they are far more cucked than Catholicism. TULIP, Predestination, etc.

The only men I’ve found I could truly trust in meatspace with dangerous thoughcrimes, have been those who go to the right Churches. Even when they don’t 100% agree with what I speak. I’ve been delving a bit into the predestination debate. By no means an expert – the thing about ‘read old books’ they never tell you is that old books tend to be a slog to get through, and Calvin is among the sloggiest. But a couple of thoughts:
– I used to be under the impression that the free will debate was downstream of Calvin, an interpretation of his teachings. But that’s wrong – Calvin is clearly a predestinationist, has in fact dedicated an entire book to the subject.
– Some of his teachings I am not sure what to say on. he references church fathers a lot, especially Augustine, and is much more knowledgeable on them than I am.
– however, the general gist of Calvin seems to me to be one of very much wanting to be the ‘goodest boy in the class’, eg if life is a classroom and God is the teacher, John Calvin is sitting front row raising his hand at every opportunity. He kisses God’s ass a lot is what I’m trying to say. Does this make him God’s favorite pupil, or does this, as my opinion leans towards, make him somewhat cringe? ‘Tis a conundrum as unfalsifiable as predestination.
I tend to toss the predestination debate as yet another of those things beyond mortal comprehension. One is not saved by shaving theology with a sharp razor.
Nor is one saved by having faith in God. One is saved by being faithful to God, as God is faithful to us.
Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God.
These overly clever theological debates sound suspiciously like Gnostic Gnosis, the claim that you can be saved, achieve enlightenment, perform miracles, whatever, by knowing other worldly stuff. It is a false substitute for right conduct in this world and true knowledge of it.

Our free will comes from being created in the image of a God with free will. God treats us as if we have free will. i.e. Jesus is the door. It’s up to us to walk through it. God creates covenants with us. There is no such thing as making a deal with a being that cannot choose. If we were not given will, Jesus would be a boat without a rudder or oars, only a sail left to wind. The Bible is full of examples of God giving us choice. Predestination undermines the idea of choice.
We can create systems we cannot predict longterm outcomes or endstates. An all powerful God can certainly create a similar system.
How can choice be independent from causality if not independent from causality how is it not in fact illusory. To me it seems free will is a lot like Democracy…

There are multiple verses in the Bible that implies God was surprised by human actions. If that doesn’t disprove predestination I don’t know how else it can be interpreted.

Which is not to say that an argument can’t be made that the Dutch 17th century was strong because of its Calvinism, but I’d argue that Calvinism’s strength came from the ability to resist and fight back against papal authority, whereas the doctrine of predestination was a long-term holiness spiral liability.
Elizabeth I was also an opportunistic Calvinist as well given the fact she was disinherited by her zealously Calvinist brother Edward and spared execution (barely) by her zealous Catholic sister Mary (if Mary thought her a true Calvinist I doubt she would have lived). I say her siblings who probably knew her true religious views better than othery probably thought she was basically an irreligious cynic (probably not an atheist as true atheists then were rare).
