Can Iran build nukes while the US continues to bomb? Quite possibly. Nazi Germany was able to build rockets even though the US had far more liberty to bomb Nazi Germany that it has to bomb Iran. Iran has been using conventional boats to lay naval mines and those boats have been getting blown up. They still manage to lay some mines, no doubt, but their strategy looks to be based more on intimidation of civilians (oil tankers) than military capability, which is in keeping with their usual MO.
Mines are dangerous, expensive and time consuming to clear, so it is a true statement that if Iran turns the Persian gulf into a giant minefield, they would hold the largest bargaining chip and there isn’t much anyone could do about it. We do not yet know if they can achieve this or if the attempts will merely be an inconvenience. And if they do achieve it, likely to piss off more countries than just the US and its clients.
In an all-out ground war, the US would have slim chances. On this I agree and I think most agree. However, there still is no ground war. The US is an empire based on naval and air power, and currently appears to have complete control of the airspace, including the ability to sink boats, which implies (to me) the ability to also send in US ships as necessary.
If Iran could selectively close the strait with drones, let only Chinese ships through, etc., then that would probably give them a lot of leverage. Is that iron will, or is it desperation? I think there is a third possibility here, which isn’t getting talked about because it’s hard to prove or disprove and isn’t very exciting anyway, but which may already be happening: Iran and the US keep barking and chest-thumping about the strait in public but quietly back away from the issue in private.
Commerce has a habit of routing around politics, even war, and truly shutting down the strait is a double-edged sword for Iran since their economy depends on that export. They’d be cutting off their nose to spite their face. Both sides benefit far more from bluffing about the issue (if their bluff is not called) than they do from actually fighting it out.
I’ve asked myself, how would this type of outcome play out, and what aspects would be visible to us? Something like a worked shoot, to use the kayfabe term:
– Iran officially declares that only and China and India will be allowed transit, making bilateral deals with each.
– Trump/USG pretend to chimp out but only send a few token vessels to spar for show. American and Russian media spin this as unreadiness but Trump and Hegseth are unfazed.
– Other gulf states expand their use of alternative routes, and start investing in new/upgraded pipelines.
– Trump/USG ease off Russian sanctions, ostensibly to cover the short term but realistically as a prelude to longer-term normalization.
– Crude oil futures start to stabilize and regress back toward the mean.
– China and India are suspiciously silent about the oil.
– Over time (perhaps several months), people stop caring, Iran gets tired of “enforcing” the selective “ban”, and economic competition forces them to eventually open it back up, but there won’t be any fanfare in the media, we will find out months later that unfavored-nation traffic just happens to be passing through unmolested.
This is by no means a perfect checklist of “if this happens, we won/everything is fine” or anything like that, it’s just speculation of what that outcome could look like, and over the past few days:
– Oil futures dropped significantly a few days ago, and did creep up again but not all the way to beginning-of-week levels.
– Oil is rumored to already be flowing to China, with a separate India deal rumored to be in talks. Of course, no one is admitting to anything specific. Fog of war, etc.
– Saudis have stepped up to claim they can meet about half of the non-Indian/non-Chinese demand previously flowing through the strait (an extra 4M barrels a day, up to 7M) by ramping up the East-West pipeline.
– US told India to buy some oil from Russia, effectively lifting sanctions locally and temporarily.
– If China and India are getting their oil, then combined with the extra Saudi oil for everyone else, and the IEA strategic reserve being opened up, that’s close to 100% of the former demand being met.
I believe this could actually end in something like a stalemate, with both sides declaring unilateral victory, which is a classic Trumpian outcome.
Heavy emphasis on “could”, of course. I do not intend the above as a firm prediction, just… something to think about.
Pray that it gets worse, much much worse, not least because History never gets better for the leading Civ on its own.

This is roughly where I am. Iran leadership wants a long closure of the strait to spike oil prices in order to ensure a massive Democratic victory in the midterms, the impeachment of Trump, and thus making sure they are never attacked again no matter what they are building to point at Israel or the Sunni states they don’t like. This is literally their main strategy is to try to create a Democrat landslide by high oil prices (also to sour the gulf states on cooperating the US and Israel, which may not have worked everywhere but probably worked with Dubai).
The thing is that almost every country in the world (with the notable exception of Russia which would see their sanctions go away, the Euros stop supplying Ukraine, and their oil being able to sold openly at a massive premium) would be massively hurt by a prolonged closure of the straits. And also it seems doubtful that Supreme Leader #2 is alive, and if he is alive he is probably in a hidden bunker in a coma. Its very odd that the regime would not have given a proof of life of him by now, so now we’re back to Iran being governed by a junta of regional revolutionary guard commanders. Maybe they think they can rule themselves without unity of command or maybe they pick another leader… and maybe the other leader decides the other two didn’t last very long.
So on balance its possible Iran will be able to keep the straits closed for a long time, but not very likely. Do they want to face the kind of world combined expeditionary force China dealt with during the boxer rebellion (with the prospect of the US navy transporting millions of PLA troops to invade Iran) and will the next couple supreme leaders be so sincerely eager for martyrdom… possible. And its possible Iran just can’t keep the straits closed effectively even if they want to.
Iran never had much unity of command. Therefore now has even less. If the Ayatollah is alive, it would not be hard for him to generate a video where he references current events. He could use a burner phone that has never had a sim card or internet connection, then give the phone to someone expendable.
This creates the possibility that a group that has unity of command, and a backdoor that this commander is acceptable to Trump, and Trump manages to squelch the Israelis (big if there) then they could take over.
Without unity of command, the possibility of takeover by a group that has backing from outside is very much a possibility. Presumably this is what Trump is betting on. But, fog of war, and Trump lacks understanding of the power of faith.
The faith of the previous regime was weak, corrupt, and cynical. There is a high likelihood that whatever regime emerges will have a purer faith, which is probably not what Trump has in mind.
Religious revivals are strange things and they tend to not come about when a religion has de jure power under a rather unpopular regime. Not sure a purer faith is possible under the circumstances.
As for the straits it seems some of the oil flow is being piped to the West coast of Saudi and being tankered out through the red sea though I’m not sure of the % of pre Iran strike oil being piped this way (apparently there are two pipelines with a capacity of aproximately combined 9.5 million barrels per day, about 20 million barrels per day was coming out of the strait pre war with now probably about 2 million in Chinese specially permitted tankered oil going through). Strange Iran has not hit the pipeline (which apparently was barely used before this) which I would think would be a rather easy target… the fact that they can’t makes me more optimistic this will be over soon.

Near as I can tell, a big part of US strategy is to keep ‘rerolling’ the Iran leadership until it gets a roll that it can work with. Will it work? Dunno.
