At Nuremberg, a new post Westphalian order was announced. Obeying the sovereign was no longer acceptable. You had to adhere to a higher moral order. Whose moral order? Not God’s. Whose?
Well, it turned out to be Harvard’s moral order, which has rapidly mutated to something evil and intolerable. But the rule against genocide seems quite reasonable, except it is selectively imposed and creatively interpreted. It was selectively imposed and creatively interpreted because it is not reasonable. War is horrible, genocidal war especially horrible, but we don’t really have a solution for war, therefore we don’t really have a solution for genocide. You need the credible possibility of genocide to force the loser to make peace, and also to remind people how terrible war is. What happened instead is that genocide was pretended away, with the result that it came to pass that peoples were genocided for frivolous and abhorrent reasons. Obama had a go at genociding the Alawites, seemingly because they refused to have an education system dominated by childless women.
The Nuremberg order is hypocrisy. And its hypocrisy has now become transparent. The trouble with hypocrisy is that piously proclaiming adherence to impractical moral principles is apt to lead to not better behaviour, but worse. Because Holocaustianity teaches that genocide is the worst thing in the world and the new moral order guarantees there will be no more genocide, genocide was attempted, and sometimes succeeded, frivolously.
If tech civilisation does not decline and collapse, well, we are all going to get more and more powerful weapons, and yes, we do need a higher moral order to avoid destroying ourselves. But the Nuremberg higher order has lost credibility. “The rules based order.” Whose rules?
Our best prospects to avoid the nukes flying in the near future is a return to the Westphalian order. Once Westphalia is in force again, then we can start thinking about the Christian laws of just war, and then we can start thinking about a higher moral order. During the concert of Europe this actually worked. It can work again. But that higher moral order has to focus, as it focused in the Concert of Europe, on not starting wars that are likely to get too big, rather than not finishing a war once it has started. War is hell. That cannot be fixed. What can be done, because it was done for quite a while, is avoiding really big wars.
The Nato states on Russia’s border are an intolerable threat to Russia, because Russians plausibly believe they lack real sovereignty. If they do lack real sovereignty, they may be unable to make peace, necessitating a genocidal solution. People are refusing to think about this, because genocide is unthinkable. They should have thought about it before the 2014 coup in the Ukraine, and before Nato shells from Avdeevka start landing on the heads of civilians in Donetsk. The Concert of Europe worked by not getting into this sort of situation in the first place, not by forbidding terrible solutions to it.
If Europe, rather than Poland, or rather than X, gets to decide what posts Poles are allowed to read on X, this is likely to lead to the destruction of every Polish city and the death of most Poles. It is far more important, far more effective, and far easier, to have a rule against this sort of thing than to have a rule against genocide.
If Europe, but not Poland nor individual Poles, can decide what Poles can read on X, this reveals that Europe, but not Poland, can decide anything that actually matters, which is likely to make it impossible to for Poland to stay out of the war when Ukraine collapses, and impossible to make peace with Russia should they lose, with the result that all their stuff gets destroyed, and most of them die.
Populations should be assigned to and be the responsibility of state egregores, and should be sent — or sent back, in many cases — to the state egregore in cases of misbehavior or unassimilability. (Not to mention illegals, who are criminal invaders and should be treated as such.)
Thus, if authentic Americans don’t like Indians, should send them to India, if you don’t like Jews, should send them to Israel, and if you don’t like blacks, send them to Africa. This at least minimizes the need for genocide. And similarly, some Islamic/Arab entities should take in the Palestinians.

Genocide has usually been an ultima ratio. If the loser does not accept the offer it might be that the loser has no leadership or a leadership that does not want to accept that offer. In either case, the winner can make an attempt at installing a new leadership. If that that is not possible, the winner can attempt to simply kill the leadership and hope that the new leadership is more willing and able to accept the somewhat tolerable peace.
If genocide is on the table, the loser’s leadership can be killed several times before that approach for a solution is given up. If repeatedly killing the loser’s leadership did not produce the desired results, the next step in history was usually an attempt to break up the loser’s state into smaller entities. Maybe some of the smaller entities will accept a somewhat tolerable peace offer.
Anyway, genocide implies that there is a gens, i.e. a tribe or nation. If an empire loses, it can easily be split up into smaller parts that can be managed independently of each other. Carthage was an empire the Romans could not make peace with, but they genocided only the population of the city Carthage. They had no problem ruling the other parts of Carthage’s empire.
Now, the Palestinians are a gens and therefore in danger of genocide. In contrast, Russia fights an empire. Genociding some vassals would be pointless. It might still happen, but then it would simply be collateral damage of war rather than a policy goal.

It will be more difficult for Israel to survive if Europe falls. Northwestern Europe is now in the process of replacing its non-existent grandchildren with Islamic brownoids. Once the latter reach a certain demographic threshold, and if they gain access to power, they will bring in their entire countries of origin into the countries they seek to conquer. If Europeans don’t stop and reverse the invasion in the coming two or three decades, they will find it next to impossible to do so afterwards. I am not aware of any evidence supporting this thesis. The Old Testament account is that the ancient Israelites were a pastoralist land people, except for the tribe of Dan, who were a sea people, and show up in here and there in old history and legends as sea people and shipwrights. Unfortunately, they do not bother with the next rule, but I digress…
2. At least one county branch of Croatian Institute of Public Health has prepared extensive amount of iodine for quick intake. This is from a first-hand source, from someone close to me. It was presented as a simple precaution order of that branch chief, not initiated by any higher-up, but it immediately rang a bell.
I can only guess how it will begin, but I suspect something along the lines of “Orks have suffered gazillion dead, even if they took that Časov Jar, Mr. President, and Putler is falling, falling, falling… surely he will finally fall with that wee little nuke here and there, nothing bad will happen, General. A Kardashev two polity is capable of destroying another Kardashev polity a thousand light years away without the other being able to respond, so to reach Kardashev three, have to get seriously closer to implementing God’s will on earth as in heaven.
But it is likely to be difficult for a Kardashev two polity to take out all the interstellar nomads and hermits getting around on fusion power and gravitational assist, so if our first attempt at Kardashev three destroys itself, as it likely will, the nomads can start over, as with the Bronze Age collapse.
Getting back to the present and the road to Kardashev one: All resources that can be extracted with eighteenth century tech have been used up, so if civilisation collapses yet again, recovery is going to be difficult. We will be mining the ruins for veins of rust left by rebar. It is doable, but it substantially reduces the advantage that a higher tech, higher intelligence race will have over its neighbours.

Sure, but collapse is mostly a GAE problem. It is very possible that Western civilization collapses without taking every other civilization on earth with it. It wouldn’t be too hard rebuilding the cities with Chinese tech after collapse.

What every one of us can do is father as many children as he can and then helping them forming families to provide as many grandchildren as possible. Those of us who are blessed may even help some their great-grandchildren, but that’s about it. Anyway, I don’t see what else I (and most readers of this blog) could to do to keep Western civilization from collapsing. Very few of us are in positions of power and can meanigfully affect what a national government does.

I might be able to something about some of the signs of impending collapse, but then it would be even harder to address the causes of collapse (which I can’t do, not even with the help of my family and my friends – in my opinion we’ll need a prophet and king to do that).
I’ll not strive to keep the lights on in my part of Germany. When the lights go out, it should be easier to do something about the cultural causes of collapse because the government’s power to punish people for insufficient leftism will then be greatly diminished.

Your comment suggests you would capture a very large quantity of solar energy and send it out in a tight beam to accelerate the vehicle. A few questions though:
1. How do you capture that much solar energy? (i.e., how do you start toward Kardashev II)
2. What is the actual mechanism of translating that energy into acceleration at the vehicle?
3. What rate of acceleration might be achieved?
A Bussard ramjet just cannot work. Violates the laws of physics. When you fuse anything to anything, your output has to have roughly equal amounts of protons and neutrons. The interstellar medium is mostly hydrogen. Not enough neutrons. The conversion of protons to neutrons is just slow.
And for any fusion drive, you have the problem of waste heat. Suppose your drive is fifty percent efficient. You are going to need an enormous heat dissipator. With a beamed energy drive, you already have very high efficiencies and an enormous radiator. Suppose your reflector is 99% efficient, which is readily achievable because the incoming beam has known frequency range, and your reflector radiates as a black body at 300°C, 600°K. And suppose that only forward facing surface radiates efficiently, since the backward facing surface is optimised for reflection, not dissipating waste heat.
Then each square kilometre of your reflector can dissipate seven gigawatts, so if reflection is 99% efficient, can reflect seven hundred gigawatts per square kilometre, for a force of five kilonewtons per square kilometre. Assuming your reflector and radiator have the same mass per square meter as aluminium foil, three hundred grams per square meter.
You get an acceleration of one six hundredth of earth gravity.
Of course, with a fusion drive, you are expelling fuel at about 2% of the speed of light, so you get fifty times as much thrust per unit of power. But your power per area of radiation is about the same, so unless you can make a ridiculously light head radiator, your actual thrust is going to be smaller. Plus your top delta vee is limited by your fuel supply, to a few percent of the speed of light.
Fusion is going to beat beamed power if you are expelling a lot of reaction mass, for speeds limited by the amount of reaction mass you can carry to much less than two percent of the speed of light. Beamed power is the only mechanism that can get you a decent fraction of the speed of light. For top speeds limited to a few percent of a few percent of the speed of light, they are likely to be somewhat comparable technologies.
Further, suppose you can make your reflector far thinner than aluminium foil. You can achieve decent reflection with a reflecting layer only sixty nanometres thick. Trouble is that if any light gets through the reflector, it is going to fry the radiator, so let us assume we can get it down to three hundred nanometers. Then you get an acceleration of one half of earth gravity, which can get you places in reasonable time.
A six hundred degree kelvin heat radiator for a fusion drive has a lot of mass per square kilometre, because you need to pump a lot of working fluid around a long distance. The heat radiator for a reflector is a thin film, because it radiates the heat in situ. So you get enormously more thrust per unit mass of radiator. For an interstellar drive, most of the mass is always going to be the heat radiator.
For any interstellar drive, the problem is that you have dissipate heat so you do not cook yourself. Let us suppose your fusion drive is sixty percent efficient. What happens to the other forty percent?
Whereas with a beam drive, the surface area of your reflector is gigantic, so it can dissipate astronomical amounts of heat.

I’m not sure I could call Napoleon a loser with a straight face, but it’s also a real stretch to say he was secular.
By his own public statements, he believed in God, no questions asked, and as for the particulars, he felt that a people needed to be governed by a religion that was actually appropriate for those people, and that whether he had a personal “connection” with that belief system was irrelevant to his role as a monarch/conqueror/etc.
Which is barely a hair’s breadth from what we believe. I’ve been with my wife now for over a decade. It’s a happy marriage. Yet we still, on occassion, have big fights. I am in fact surprised by how often we have fights. Not in the sense that it is disappointing, but in the sense that conflict turns out to be very necessary to keep making adaptive changes.

There is really only one single way to solve the problem of cooperation, and that is by way of prophets. Men who channel the divine. I’m starting to think Terry Davis was right about compilers, 15 million line compilers are a huge mistake. Rather than ‘optimising’ noise, we could have thousand-line compilers that generate a 1:n precise relationship between code and machine code, so that any experienced coder could read code and know, deterministically, what the machine code output would be. What if we went further and just made a very simple (stack based etc) assembly on a virtual machine, and then just kept expanding its instructions to more and more abstract commands. So a high level language within ASM. The hardware would follow once it is worked out. Seems like if done correctly, one could make comprehensible programs where the machine code is literally the source, a huge step towards open systems. I cannot envision Oort Cloud computers having 15 million line compilers. The goal should be that they can unbox a computer for the first time, read through the booklet , and understand literally every step up mechanically from keypress into what is on screen, and to do that we should be greatly simplifying the derivation of the different layers

I have, over time, come to the reverse conclusion, that metaprogramming with complex types driving code generation is the way to go — that to get places you need higher and higher levels of abstraction from the hardware to make large complex problems manageable.

Linix has far too many eyeballs on it to be compromised enough to matter. They probably have a handful of zero days but not on every system, and those zero days are likely to be noisy and reveal to much to be used except as a last resort.
You want to worry more about your cryptography and networking stacks, which are easier to make subtle changes to that reduce guarentees from what the protocol should and could be, to something sniffable by the NSA.
Also want to worry about your hardware, but Chinese capitalism is solving this soon. Trusting fellow man system is leading to massive bloated code bases using a thousand times the resources with plummeting reliability and responsiveness, something has to be rotten with the fundamentals. I envision a super simple universal VM asm with forth-style postfix, a hassle to reason about directly, but possible, if desired, and a super simple tier above that, with infix, functions and such. Everything written in the tier above is directly deterministically converted into the asm, so tightly that you could literally formally convert back and forth between blocks of the two (or for asm which cannot be written in the tier above, just gets inlined), hence, source code is still essentially equivalent to the machine logic. No optimisation at all. Every coder is expected to learn both languages, and compilation logic, and done. ‘Applications’ should look more like someone writing poetry, single piece, sharable and archivable like a jpeg or as a long tight charcode, they wouldn’t even call the OS but exist in VM space, the VM which acts as an OS delegates the memory and such in response to a request, the only thing any actually OS would need to do is run the VM and draw it’s output, there then becomes not really such thing as ‘compiling’ (other than a switch which toggles between bigger-and-harder-to-read-tier1-codeeasier-to-read-tier2-code), and no such thing as a platform specific compile as to the extent it needs system calls it is only accessing the universal VM design that is running inside
You need types, and the ability to manipulate types as first class values. Template metacode is the most user hostile widely used language in the world, because it was never designed as a language, but rather happened as a result of the template system incoherently accruing ever more features until it accidentally became Turing complete, but something that does what it does is essential to solving large complex problems.
Further, in order to integrate with everything else, such as the linux kernel (you want to write your own kernel?) has to compile into the LLVM toolchain.
It would not be thinking about metaprogramming or downward integration, the starting goal would be to build nonshit versions of the basic PC applications which are in decline, word processors, image viewers, all of that. Being on a universal ‘kernel’, the programs become timeless, somewhat similar to how web code is somewhat timeless (the underlying OS and browser updates and bloats, but in theory everyone is supposed to parse web code to the same standard over the years), not specific to any particular system, and with the strict and formalised 1:1 or 1:n language design as mention above, the (platformless) machine code becomes equivalent to its source. Such a system would encourage the constant perfecting, tweaking, branching, resharing, different apps, as easily as people might edit and share a jpeg. If the new incentives lead to a huge variety of timeless and perfect nonshit apps, one literally doesn’t care about about next 20gb jeetupdate making it hard to write a letter, because one can always build the VM-viewer on any device, and in the VM the same 2mb full-responsiveness MSword-equivalent app from 20 or 30 years ago continues to function exactly as it always has
The reason that everything is built on an immense pile of ancient C code is that this stuff takes a very long time to write from scratch, so whenever someone says “Well now we can see that wrong turns were taken, so let us do it over”, they fail. Or if they succeed, as for example LLVM, it is because they have mighty deep pockets and a whole lot of patience and persistence.
Worse: Ubuntu is woke and corporate, and Debian is woke. Moving to Arch.
Arch is funded by Steam, but Steam is not trying to own its users. Its just that Steam competes with XBox, and Valve’s major product runs on windows so it is trying to resist dominance by an even bigger corporation. Steam wants to move its product line onto arch because it is trying to escape corporate domination, not impose corporate domination on arch, so headed off to arch for much the same reasons I did.

Of course if you run games on linux, yep, corporate domination, because you are running software that steam built for their products, but had to open source in order to escape Microsoft. But everything else that they do for arch does not smell of any effort to control it or its users. And if you are running games, they are apt to run better on arch, because steam builds for arch, and everyone else has to port from arch.
Shame about Debian, if true. It’s generally the lowest friction in terms of being able to find compatible software, and doesn’t actively get in your way if you’re trying to set up a headless server (e.g. a Docker stack… or a crypto stack). I didn’t realize they’d gone woke, though as far as Ubuntu is concerned, it’s been obvious for several years the direction in which they were headed.
I wonder if Arch is the island of sanity you’re hoping for, however. A short time ago I was a member of an online community that became infested with literal commies, as in card-carrying Marxists (I’ve since cut ties, obviously), and they were all in love with Arch. There is always a tension between the Marxists and Progressives, so maybe that really does imply that Arch is un-woke, but I’m not sure that having a horde of Marxists in the community is all that much better. From what I can tell, Debian looks less bloated off the shelf than Arch.
If you really want the absolute minimum, and are willing to do everything yourself, maybe go with Alpine. It’s the distro of choice for many Docker base images and is designed to be as slim and locked-down as possible by default. Hardly anyone seems to use it as an actual bare-metal OS because, well, there’s not much there; but if Zero Trust is priority #1 then it fits the bill. Its corporate sponsors are mostly foreign and/or hardware/datacenter companies, no foundations.

Also, something that’s missing yet hugely important in most code is, strangely enough, aesthetics.
I think we are approaching a model where instead of defining functions that take values, you define class definitions that take class definitions. Template metacode.
There’s a marked trend toward mixed-paradigm compilers that support functional style, template metaprogramming and traditional imperative. Consider:
– Embedded/kernel code: Rust currently has the crown, has highly optimized FP features like closures and iterators, metaprogramming through Traits, and imperative baseline.
– Traditional desktop/console: C++ has been incorporating more and more functional features since roughly C++11, and has always had a long tradition of template and macro based solutions.
– Web/hobbyist: Everything of consequence uses TypeScript now, only weirdos insist on untyped JS/ES. It inherits FP features from JS, has a very extensive type system that’s just shy of actual metaprogramming, and adds a decorator system to fill in the meta gap.
Of course there are still people out there writing code in PHP, or Java, or whatever, and those aren’t going away any time soon, but I don’t think anyone seriously considers them to be state-of-the-art.
Complexity is hard to manage because the behavior is complex, not because the “code” is complex. The more complex a CPU’s instruction set, the more dire the need for a compiler to abstract it. There are maybe a few dozen people in the country who know how to write safe SIMD code at the machine level, the rest of us are far better off relying on the C++ or Rust bindings – or better yet, just using a high-level parallelism library that decides when it’s appropriate. Same deal with the shuffling zombies of AVX2 and AVX-512, I guess they have some utility but most people who try to write directly for them only end up with programs that are twice as slow and use five times the power.
Being directly exposed to an ever-expanding hardware instruction set without any useful abstraction offered by the compiler sounds like a nightmare. Nothing would ever get done. Well, that’s not true; eventually things would get done because eventually someone would take the useless compiler and use it to write an actually useful compiler.
Writing in a current year machine code is 80% messing with registers, where a stack machine in theory might be, 20% slower. In practice, people abstract upwards to avoid the hassle of registers, which lead to the 15 million line ‘optimisers’ doing the work for you, except it is now 1,000% less efficient when you consider the ‘frameworks’ being utilised.
The starting screen of warcraft3 used about 32mb in 2003 when sitting on the menu, with a bit of code creating the graphical effect of a torn banner being blown around by wind in a storm.
The ‘remastered’ version two decades later, uses React to embed a Chromium engine, so at least 100 times the memory, but also takes several seconds to change screen when it used to be instant, so guesswork tells me 10,000 or 100,000 times slower cycle wise.
So an overly complex fundamental underneath, leads to these massive optimisers, which lead to horrible ‘frameworks’ to make things simple again.

You’re making the argument that technology itself is the cause of declining standards in technology, which is kissing cousins with the argument that technological progress (or food abundance, or more advanced construction techniques, or any other marker of high civilization) is itself the cause of declining morality and social cohesion; that it’s simply the inevitable cost of progress, oops, don’t know what happened but we’d better go back to the bronze age or stone age and try again with even more liberalism.
Like Marxism, it’s obviously a very seductive line of reasoning for many, but that doesn’t make it any less wrong or evil. High-level languages aren’t killing mass-produced software; companies run and staffed by priests and stuffed to the gills with jeets and karens and diversity hires are killing mass-produced software. High-level languages and reactive frameworks aren’t the problem; people misusing high-level languages and reactive frameworks are the problem.
Everyone who’s had a consulting or fixit career or gig in the field has seen it a thousand times before. Some big company just can’t seem to get their system up to snuff, despite having all the most expensive toys. Their development staff has reached the “obvious” conclusion that MSSQL just doesn’t scale, or MongoDB is too fragile, or PHP or ASP.NET just aren’t up to task, so they probably need to rewrite everything from scratch using Redis and Zig and whatever else is the latest flavor of the month. And then said fixit guy actually takes a look at their systems and realizes that their developers don’t know how to run a performance analyzer or even create a fucking index, and their ASP.NET or PHP code is slow because it makes 37 of those queries in a single request.
There’s a funny tongue-in-cheek saying that’s been going around the industry for the past few years: “Just use Postgres for everything.” It’s really not the best tool for things like message queuing or full-text search, and the best-in-class alternatives are two or three orders of magnitude more performant – but unless you are in a highly specialized domain like fintech or blockchains, your users are never going to notice the difference. Good developers who actually worry about performance can build at greater and greater scale as the tools become more and more abstracted. Bad developers will build dog shit at any level of abstraction.
Ok, but who cares about boring old business software, we’re talking about games, right? Well, it turns out to be pretty much the same thing. Modern games tend to have millions of distinct entities active at any given time, anything from the player character to a cloud in the sky or a breakable wall, and it turns out that while there are some features that are both necessary and expensive, like physics simulation and pathing, poorly-designed games waste most of their time just looking stuff up and writing back trivial data every frame and failing to use more than one CPU core. ECS – that’s Entity Component System, not the dumb Amazon product with the same acronym – has been around in some form for over fifty years, and in common use for thirty, and when used properly it can handle massively parallelized realtime queries and updates, which is very much analogous to the properly configured and indexed database in the enterprise. The problem is that stubborn “game devs” just flat-out refuse to design for it, or worse, try to invent their own.
UI is actually infamously painful in game development and it’s not surprising that people seek abstractions, and there are many native toolkits that are designed to look and feel (to the developer) like React or some other popular web framework because those frameworks are highly productive and actually very fast on the web. But – c’mon, who the fuck embeds a Chromium browser in a commercial game and renders an actual webpage? And when you see that kind of incompetence on display, you know it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Blaming technological progress for technological decline is stupid. It’s human factors that are causing tech decline.

When you use a high level tool, you have to understand what it is doing.
When you run an sql query, is it going to randomly page data from the disk non sequentially, from a table or index that is too big to all fit in memory? If you do not think about what the abstraction means at the level of bits and bytes, or, more often, do not understand what the abstraction means in terms of bits and bytes, you are going to write very bad software.
If, on the other hand, you do not use high level abstractions, and instead work directly with bits and bytes, not only will you never finish, but you will find it impossible to write a large complex program that does large complex things, and that very smart people were unable to write or maintain large Forth programs that actually worked demonstrates this.
Understanding bits and bytes, and, in the case of SQL and Entity Component System, memory paging, is necessary. Using low level things directly is seldom wise. Because Forth used paging directly and explicitly, just like it used everything directly and explicitly, useless for anything that needed paging. Understanding low level things, and being able to use them directly, is essential.
If you do not understand, and are unable to use, paging directly on your little Rasberry, you will not be able to build a system that scales.
Similarly with atomics. What the atomics library is going to do is unpredictable. If you cannot predict it, probably should use only atomics that the compiler can directly lower to machine code without using the atomics library. The atomics library is designed to make any operation atomic — including operations that you should not be making atomic.

Lol, for what it’s worth, Richard Hamming in his memoirs (“The Art and Science of Doing Engineering”, Ch. 4, p. 42) wrote about the same issue popping up before that. Some of the venerated elders thought symbolic assembly language rotted the mind back in the day and took away your control of e.g., memory locations.
It needs a precise, unoptimised relationship between the code tiers, so you can formally toggle between tiers, and conceptually it is all the same, hence not real compiling, but different views into the same machine design. You could view the lowest level on the right, which is forth-like (a universal, VM-based machine code), and then view the higher level calls with classes and such on the left, probably with less characters and more spacing, as go up many tiers as you like, though I think two is enough for everything. Typing a single key on either of the ‘code views’ would immediately update the other one. So there can still be abstraction but also pure determinism simultaneously, you could build a tight little oldschool calculator on the right hand side, but reaching 2kb or so realise it is hard or impossible to maintain, so you switch a tier or two upwards, but the raw mechanics, rebar and such, all open to view on the right even as it gets very big. The formal ‘derived’ relationship being in both directions still means that machine code and source is one and the same, reverse engineering built in, the only thing being dumped on release is labels and variable names, but the system would make it easy to add your own labels back, conceptually it would still be totally open

There’s a certain kind of mindset that confuses complexity with cleverness, and cleverness with wisdom. The result is needlessly complex, Rube Goldberg-ish solutions to simple problems that can and should be resolved with simple solutions.

So many modern games are ruined by by having excessive amounts of rules and stuff (items, characters, move sets, dialogue, etc.) that serve no real gameplay or narrative purpose and seem to exist just so the designers can pat themselves on the back.
The early console generations were the golden age, not because 8-bit graphics and audio actually look or sound good or because 2D is necessarily better than 3D, but because the limitations of the hardware forced developers to actively think about the “why”, and only include features that would actually enhance the experience.
You can still find the “every feature should have a clear purpose” mentality in many shops, especially startups and indies that just don’t have time and money to blow on fluff. In a large company or studio, it’s easier to hide the waste, and they are also juicier targets for lawfare, so parasites proliferate before finally killing the host (i.e. late-stage Blizzard).
Here again, I place the lion’s share of blame on the jeets and congenital priests; the latter, knowing they cannot actually innovate, need to invent any old excuse to justify their existence, and the former are too busy furiously copying and pasting and making random trial-and-error changes to ever even think about asking “why”. It seems likely that much of the damage caused by censorship is irreversible, short of a full retrain, which is impossible for private parties to afford. So the Josiefied model can talk about forbidden thoughts, and the absence of the policeman inside makes it smarter, but I suspect that there is hole remaining where the policeman was removed.
The smallest useful edge models, models one can run locally, need sixteen gig of vram. And they still hallucinate a lot. But I don’t see any important difference between them and big models, other than a somewhat worse hallucination rate. Which may reflect the way I use them.
I do see a big important difference between a model that will run in eight gig, and a model that will run in sixteen gig, but it looks to me that these two hundred billion parameter cloud models are well into the declining returns part of the curve, at least for my use case. Edge LLMs are here. The difference between a model that runs locally in sixteen gig, and a model that runs in an enormous cloud centre, is not all that noticeable or important. At least for the way I am interacting with them.
Sixteen gig of vram will give you a reasonably adequate coding assistant.
On the other hand, if you only have eight gig of vram, you are likely to miss the cloud data centre model.

The Unix/Linux philosophy is almost the exact opposite of your idyllic world; one of innumerable small self-contained CLI programs with output piped from one to the next. It is not applicable to every problem, but within its domain, it is highly effective, and there are millions of shell scripts around the globe doing essential functions that would have been impossible for a mere sysadmin to undertake if the OS was just one gigantic executable. The modern trend toward centralization is one of the major criticisms of systemd, which in the eyes of many is making things worse, not better.
One real-world example sharing a lot of characteristics (but fortunately not all) with your “idea” is Rust, using its default behavior where absolutely everything necessary to run the program is compiled from source and statically linked. This results in binaries that are so famously huge it’s actually a meme. There are, of course, techniques to drastically reduce the size, which significantly hurt performance once you get past the low-hanging fruit. There’s always a tradeoff. If Windows were like this – if every program needed to be self-contained using statically-linked libraries instead of dynamically-linked libraries – that’s DLLs, which I’m sure everyone is familiar with – then everyone would need several terabytes of space just to run their basic everyday apps.
And the complexity argument just doesn’t hold, in a way that is obvious to anyone who’s ever actually written a line of code. You’re living in this fantasy world where either the “hardware” is capable of solving abstract high-level problems through infinitely-expanding instruction sets, or abstract high-level problems somehow cease to exist at all. Reality is that abstract high-level problems not only exist, but beget other, even more abstract and more high-level problems once people realize what is possible now that the earlier problem is solved. Reality is that hardware has hard limits and cannot conceivably scale to these demands, whereas software with soft limits can.
That is why software developers never seem to go obsolete despite constant predictions that they are becoming obsolete. There is effectively infinite demand; solve one complex problem and an even more complex problem demands to be solved.

There is software that is pointlessly complex, and that software tends not to survive long-term. The surviving complex software is complex because it solves complex problems. One close look at e.g. the Chromium code will tell you exactly why it’s anything but “simple” to display even the most basic web site and why having a separate app for every website would be insane.
So, go ahead, take a quick glance at Chromium’s 30 million lines of code and tell us which parts you’d cut. We’ll wait. I have a content-language that goes into a compiler as a text string, and the output of the compile is a vm, which you run each frame and get out a bunch of compositional draws for that frame (different things in such and such order/dimensions/state), the total is about three thousand lines. Pretty sure we can have 60kb ‘browsers’ inside 10mb or so operating systems and better for it. Chrome source is likely to be unpleasant, almost contaminating, and better explored after release

OK, so you built a content transformer in three thousand lines instead of thirty million. Good for you. Does it handle all the basic typography requirements including bold, italic, underscore, strikethrough, fonts, sizes, weights, colors, line and paragraph spacing, and so on? Does it display images? Which formats? Does it support basic positioning with borders, margins and padding? Does it handle more advanced layout including tabular data, flexbox and grid layout? And if documents start to get long or complex, is there some way of organizing or managing the complexity of the document itself?
Can it display content from multiple-languages? What about right-to-left languages, and CJK? Can it accept basic form input including text entry and checkbox toggles? What about less common but still very necessary input like file uploads? Does it support screen readers and other accessibility tools? Can it choreograph any kind of animations or transitions, whether declarative or scripted? Speaking of scripts, is there any way to create interactivity or is all the content static?
What about performance? How long does it take one of these “browsers” to start, and load a “page”? If a document is graphically demanding, can it offload some or all of the rendering to the GPU? Is there support for dynamic data, either natively or through extensions, and if so, what is the latency like on updates? Can you search for text within a long document? Is the search reasonably quick?
How does it handle state? Does it have its own system(s) equivalent to cookies, local storage, session storage, etc.? How does one handle basic scenarios like authentication, with credentials shared across pages? Speaking of “pages”, what is the routing system, how do you get from A to B? Does this handle classic URLs/URIs, or have you come up with some other linking system? Is it difficult to “deep link” from one of these browser “apps” into another? That’s something that’s very easy to get right on the web, and very hard to get right in e.g. Android or iOS apps.
I could go on and on, but I’m probably well past the threshold of boring the audience. The bottom line is, have you really invented a replacement for web browsers (or PostScript or LaTeX or any other presentation tool) or have you reinvented Markdown 1.0 before it had such fancy extensions as tables and custom anchors?
The debate seems too silly to carry on. Show us something that actually exists and that people are using. Doesn’t have to be created by you, can be anything at all out there that even vaguely resembles your idea, is actually successful in the commercial or open source realms, and isn’t just a three-ducks-in-a-trench-coat version of old ideas that have already been tried and failed or relegated to a tiny niche.
